A preparation that requires the compression of the herb into tablet form, generally using blinders, lubricants etc. Tablets are intended to be chewed.

Extractions of herbs in vinegar. Vinegar extractions have expectorant ,diuretic and diaphoretic properties .

Medicated wines were the earliest alcohol extracts of herbal medicines

Percolation
An extremely sufficient method of extraction , percolation involves the tickling down the menstrum through finely powdered herb in a highly controlled manner. Fluid extracts are prepared by percolation .

Poultice
an external application of herbs that is either placed directly on the skin or held within the cloth that is applied to the skin. It is usually applied as hot application.
Plaster.
Similar to a poultice,but with added flour, cornmeal,or wax to help the material adhere to the skin or cloth.
Resin.
A plant exudate secreted to seal a wound or protect against infestation .Used by humans for similar purposes .
Salve.
An oily semisolid preparation applied externally to protect and heal damaged tissue. Vulnerably herbs are used in salve form.
Douche
An infusion or decoction directed against the body or into the a body orifice ,usually refers to a vaginal admistration
Drug
a derivative of a dutch word droog, means a dried plant
Elixir
An herbal preparation that contains the herb, water, sweetener and alcohol
Emulsion
A mixture of im miscible liquids to which an emulsifying agent is added to form a stable non-separating compound
Enemas
Liquids introduced into the rectum.These liquids may contain medicines to be absorbed systematically ,or which may have a direct effect on the bowel.
Essential oils
These are highly aromatic , oxygenated derivatives of terpenese that are obtained from plants through distillation .Also known as volatile oils.
Expression
The process of forcibly separating liquids from solids .Most often used to refer to the pressing of a plant to obtain the juice (succus) of that plant .
Fixed oil
A fixed oil is the lipid part that is non aromatic and commonly referred to as vegetable oil . Almond oil. safflower oil , and olive oil are examples of fixed oils.
Fluid extract
A highly concentrated herbal preparation in which one part by volume of the preparation is equivalent to one part by the weight of the herb;This 1:1 mixture is generally prepared through percolation

Chinese Herbal Preparations
Decoctions( tang ji )
The ingredients are placed in water , or a mixture of wine and water , and then boiled for a specified period of time. The liquid is strained from the dregs and ingested through the mouth.
Powders; ( San ji )
The ingredients are ground up and sifted relatively uniform powder , then either ingested or applied externally
Pills;( Wan ji);
The ingredients are finely ground or pulverized , a liquid or other viscous medium is added, and round pills are formed.
Soft extracts(Gao ji )
The ingredients are simmered with water or vegetable oil until a concentrate with a syrupy or grummy consistency forms .
Syrups;(tang jiang ji ):
These are made by taking the strained liquid from a decoction and adding a specified quantity of cane sugar and then cooking for a prolonged period.
Medicinal wines (jiu ji )
These are made by soaking the ingredients in rice or sorghum wine or other spirits , using alcohol as a solvent
Lozenges; (dan j)
These are made by grinding the ingredients into a powder which is formed into a powder which is formed into a powder which is formed into ingot-shaped tablets, sometimes with the addition of paste, honey, or other excipient.
Tablets (Pian ji)
These are made by processing or adding a filler or other wise extracting the active parts of ingredients , adding filler , and forming the result into tablets
Injections (zhen ji )
These are made by extracting the active ingredients with modern methods and preparing asterile solutions that can be administered by injection
